While in American Samoa, there were Fautasi racing While in American Samoa, there were Fautasi racing by the cruise ship. A Fautasi is a Samoan boat that is around 100 feet long with about 50 crew and a Captain. It looks like a really long row boat. Fautasi races are held on American Samoa’s Flag Day celebrations each year, which is April 17th. The Equator Crossing Ceremony is a seafaring tradition that occurs on cruise ships to celebrate the crossing of the equator. The Volcano Winery wine tasting tour was the perfe The Volcano Winery wine tasting tour was the perfect rainy day excursion while the cruise ship was in Hilo, Hawaii. The Volcano Winery is located about 30 miles from Hilo and we were taken there by a small bus, from the cruise terminal. Our group was only seven guests. (The guest capacity of this tour is about 20 so I’m really glad that the tour operator didn’t cancel because of the low bookings!) The winery makes a variety of wines from area-sourced ingredients. There was more than the usual amount of luggage that was loaded onto the cruise ship this past turnaround day in Los Angeles. Was it because this is a 28-day cruise? Do you fly or drive when you cruise from the Port Do you fly or drive when you cruise from the Port of Los Angeles? Do you seek out cruises that you can drive to rather than fly to your cruise? The Navigator of the Seas cruise ship was in port with Crown Princess in Los Angeles yesterday. The Navigator of the Seas uses the Port of LA (San Pedro) as the embarkation port for their 3-4 day cruises to Ensenada, Mexico. The Port of LA is primarily used as an embarkation port for many Mexican Riviera and Pacific Coastal cruises. But, Crown Princess uses it as the embarkation port for cruises to Hawaii and French Polynesia. It is a very convenient embarkation port for people that live close enough and want to drive instead of fly to their cruise ship. (It’s $20 per day for parking at the Port of LA). Alternatively it is about a 35-40 minute drive from LAX airport to the World Cruise Center in San Pedro, California. Some of the other cruise ships that will be using the Port of LA this year are Discovery Princess, Norwegian Bliss, and Celebrity Solstice. Do you drive or fly when you cruise out of Los Angeles?
