After scenic cruising through Endicott Arm, @captain_tony_ruggero spun Discovery Princess around in front of Dawes Glacier. That way, every side of the cruise ship could enjoy the views. This was our last time to visit Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier for this Alaska season. It’s not guaranteed to make it all the way to Dawes with the cruise ship. If the ice concentration is too much or if it’s too windy, then it’s not safe to continue the passage in. Today we had great conditions and it made for another extraordinary experience! Today Discovery Princess was in Ketchikan, Alaska Today Discovery Princess was in Ketchikan, Alaska for her last call of the season. Typical for Ketchikan, it was raining 😉. Ketchikan, on average, receives 150 inches of rain per year which makes it one of the wettest communities in the United States. It was also very windy! Some other countries celebrate on the 4th Sunday of September. There is also World Daughters Day celebrated October 1st. We love having our daughters onboard with us and can’t wait to see them again! After 20 years of them travelling with me to visit Tony onboard, this past summer was the first time they travelled on their own to visit us on the cruise ship. What are the biggest waves that you’ve been in o What are the biggest waves that you’ve been in on a cruise ship? Today Discovery Princess has a sea day on our way to Ketchikan. The cruise ship experienced swells up to 6.5m (21 feet) this morning, but the seas have been and will be improving throughout the day. I find it sometimes difficult to take a video that shows how rough the seas actually are. The first video clip shows the waves from the Bridge which is on Deck 14 of the ship. The next video clips are from Deck 5 in the Juneau Dining Room. The Discovery Princess handles these seas very well. Therefore, it’s not surprising that there are lots of guests in all areas of the ship today, not seeming to be bothered. Puppies in the Piazza is an Alaska program on Prin Puppies in the Piazza is an Alaska program on Princess Cruises ships where junior sled dogs are brought into the Piazza of the cruise ship for a meet and greet with guests. In Skagway, sled dog puppies are brought on the cruise ship by their handlers, giving guests the opportunity to pet, hold and take pictures with them. It was explained by the handler that this program helps these puppies with their socialization skills. The puppies brought onboard yesterday were six weeks old. And, prior calls in Skagway, the puppies came with their mother. Prior to the puppies going out into the Piazza, they are “backstage” with the cruise staff. Due to strong winds, Discovery Princess used the a Due to strong winds, Discovery Princess used the assistance of a tugboat this morning upon arrival into Skagway, Alaska. @captain_tony_ruggero spun Discovery Princess 180 degrees before backing into the berth at the Aft Railroad Dock. With the wind gusting up to 40 knots (46 mph), it was necessary to use full power of Discovery Princess’ thrusters and full power of the tugboat, in order to safely dock the cruise ship portside alongside. This morning Discovery Princess arrived to Dawes G This morning Discovery Princess arrived to Dawes Glacier around 8:15am. The cruise ship got within 1.5 nautical miles of the glacier. This was the closest we’ve been to the glacier all Alaska season!!! It is such an amazing experience to see how @captain_tony_ruggero can spin the ship in such a confined space. This allowed guests staying in balconies on all sides of the ship to see the glacier. Between seeing the Northern Lights last night to this morning’s scenic cruising….wow, what a cruise!! Every cruise down Endicott Arm is different depending on weather, cloud cover, wind, fog, and ice concentration. Today was spectacular! Discovery Princess entered Endicott Arm at around 6am this morning. I turned on the TV to the Bridge Cam channel and listened to our cruise ship naturalist, @mojoadventure give his commentary through the passage. I’m so thankful to also have a balcony and enjoy the whole experience. We reached Dawes Glacier around 8:15am. The section of the alley covered in multi-coloured pieces of gum, spans approximately eight feet high and over 50 feet wide. This is a very odd tourist attraction, and many people have come to take photos, selfies, and stick their own chewed gum to the wall. Wasps, bees, and flies swarm around the alley and are very interested in the freshly stuck chewing gum. Will the Gum Wall be on your list of must sees on your next trip to Seattle? Some of the Discovery Princess crew were given the Some of the Discovery Princess crew were given the opportunity to visit the Bridge while we were in the port of Skagway yesterday. For many of these crew it was their first time to ever visit the Bridge. Crew put their name on a list in the crew office. And, regardless of their department or rank, they are given the opportunity to visit the bridge. Yesterday’s crew “visitors” came from many departments including galley, entertainment, guest services, and bar staff. Discovery Princess currently has 1,364 crew onboard who come from 68 different nationalities. Deck Cadet, Shaina, comes from The Philippines and she enthusiastically conducted the bridge visit giving lots of interesting information. Crew were given the chance to take lots of photos, and even sit in the chairs by the console. Have you had the opportunity to visit the Bridge on a cruise ship?
