➡️ Princess Cruises announced today that it has inked a deal for its next class of ships, the Voyager class.

➡️ Princess Cruises has ordered three cruise ships to be delivered in 2035, 2038, and 2039.

➡️ The ships will be constructed at its Fincantieri in Monfalcone, Italy.

➡️ Princess reported that the new Voyager Class will be the largest ships in the brand’s fleet.

➡️ The ships will be 183,000-tons and will be LNG-powered vessels, carrying 4,700 passengers. (For reference, the Sun Princess and Star Princess are 177,882 GT).

Too many sea days? ➡️ Discovery Princess is curre Too many sea days?

➡️ Discovery Princess is currently doing a 25-day repositioning cruise from Sydney to Los Angeles.

➡️ There are 19 sea days on this cruise (20, if you consider the extra “sea day” during Cyclone Vaianu).

➡️ What are your thoughts on sea days? How many is too many?
Gain a day or lose a day? ➡️ Today is April 14, 2 Gain a day or lose a day?

➡️ Today is April 14, 2026 and it’s a sea day on Discovery Princess as we are cruising north east towards Tahiti, French Polynesia.

➡️ At 10:52am this morning, Discovery Princess crossed the International Date Line.

➡️ At midnight tonight, the cruise ship clocks will be set back 24 hours, so we will gain an extra day.

➡️ This means that when we wake up tomorrow morning, it will be April 14th again.

➡️ For guests and crew that celebrate their birthday or anniversary on April 14th, they can celebrate it again tomorrow, too.

➡️ When Discovery Princess repositioned from Alaska to Asia last October, we crossed the International Dateline and we had to change the clocks one day ahead, so we lost a day on October 8th.
What is a mini-turnaround? Today was Discovery Pri What is a mini-turnaround? Today was Discovery Princess’ last call to Auckland for the 2025/2026 Australian season.

➡️ The cruise ship arrived in Australia on November 28th and has been offering cruises from Sydney for the Australian summer.

➡️ Discovery Princess is currently doing a repositioning cruise which departed from Sydney on April 7th.

➡️ April 12th was the originally scheduled date for the mini-turnaround in Auckland for Discovery Princess.

➡️ However, due to the closing of the harbour because of the cyclone, the mini-turnaround in Auckland was split over two days.

➡️ On April 11th, Discovery Princess arrived in Auckland and took on 600 tons of fuel, loaded 110 pallets of provisions, and disembarked 400+ guests.

➡️ Today, April 13th, Discovery Princess disembarked another 533 guests and embarked nearly 1,000 more guests.

➡️ Additionally today, there were 66 new joining crew and 47 crew members that finished their contract and disembarked.

➡️ There are also currently 2,462 guests that are in transit (didn’t get on or off Discovery in Auckland).

Cruise ship vs land during a cyclone? ➡️ Cyclone Cruise ship vs land during a cyclone?

➡️ Cyclone Vaianu has passed us and headed south, but we are still experiencing some strong winds on Discovery Princess.

➡️ However, the cruise ship is barely moving as she handles high winds and rough seas very well.

➡️ We also barely felt the ship move last night as we anchored in a sheltered bay.

➡️ Unfortunately, this cruise we have had to miss a couple of ports due to the Cyclone (safety first), but guests are still enjoying what the cruise ship has to offer.

➡️ On land, across the North Island of New Zealand, warnings are currently in place for flooding, fallen trees, high winds, and power outages.

➡️ How would you feel about being on a cruise during a cyclone?
Cyclone Vaianu update on Discovery Princess ➡️ Ar Cyclone Vaianu update on Discovery Princess

➡️ Around noon today, Cyclone Vaianu was located about 60 NM or 110 km east of Discovery Princess, and moving in a southerly direction away from the us.

➡️ Yesterday afternoon we arrived at a sheltered location about 15 NM from Auckland, and anchored off the coast of Takapuna beach and just north of Rangitoto Island.

➡️ Last night we managed to avoid the worst of the weather, with the ship barely moving.

➡️ However, between 2am and 3am this morning, the port anchor started dragging so the ship was repositioned 1,000 metres ESE of our original anchor drop position.

➡️ Although this morning it looked like the weather had improved, the port of Auckland will remain closed until tomorrow morning, April 13th.

➡️ Today, as we are required to produce fresh water and conduct marine operations, we left the anchorage around 1:30pm.

➡️ We are now underway, and we will be proceeding about 65 NM north from where we were anchored.

➡️ Currently the winds are changing to a westerly direction and are intensifying, reaching speeds of 50-60 knots or 93 to 111 km/hr.

➡️ If all is well, we will go back alongside at the Port of Auckland, tomorrow morning at 7am.

➡️ Bunkering is the process of filling a vessel with fuel.

➡️ Vessels are required to fly the red flag when they are bunkering or being refueled.

➡️ For cruise ships calling at the Port of Auckland, Seafuels provides a refuelling service with their 3,900 tonne tanker, Awanuia.

➡️ Today, Discovery Princess took on 600 tonnes of fuel in Auckland, for the next segment of our repositioning cruise.

➡️ All VLSFO and MGO fuels are Marpol compliant and are supplied through BP Marine.

Although the weather seems calm this morning, the clouds are moving in.

The Port of Auckland will be closing at 3pm. Therefore, Discovery Princess will leave the dock early. All aboard time is noon today.
What Cyclone? Discovery Princess has arrived in A What Cyclone?

Discovery Princess has arrived in Auckland, New Zealand ahead of Cyclone Vaianu.

➡️ Discovery Princess finished docking shortly after midnight.

➡️ You wouldn’t think that a major storm was about to land in Auckland in less than 24 hours.

➡️ Currently, the wind is calm and the sky is clear.

➡️ We need to wait until morning before the ship is granted clearance by the authorities and we can start bunkering, loading provisions, and disembarking guests.

➡️ The cruise ship will be required to leave the dock by 3pm which is the time the Port of Auckland is closing the port, ahead of the cyclone making landfall.
Cyclone Vaianu update on Discovery Princess ➡️ To Cyclone Vaianu update on Discovery Princess

➡️ Today we are cruising towards Auckland and we have been experiencing wind gusts up to 40 knots (75 km/hr) and waves up to 5 metres (16 feet).

➡️ Discovery Princess was scheduled to arrive in Auckland on April 12th, with a stop in Tauranga on April 11th and then visiting the Bay of Islands on April 13th. Unfortunately, this part of the itinerary has changed due to the forecasted cyclone.

➡️ Due to the expected landfall of Cyclone Vaianu on April 12th (or earlier), Discovery Princess will arrive in Auckland this evening, April 10th, and we will be docking shortly after midnight.

➡️ Unfortunately, the ship won’t get clearance until the morning (April 11th). That means no guests or crew will be allowed to go ashore until the morning. Once cleared, the ship will be able to get fuel and provisions, and those wishing to go ashore will be able to.

➡️ The Port of Auckland will be closing the port at 3pm on April 11th. However, the all aboard time will be at noon for in transit guests and crew.

➡️ At 3pm (or possibly earlier), Discovery Princess will move to a sheltered bay area, about 15 nautical miles away, and wait there until the bad weather has passed.

➡️ On April 13th, the ship will move back to the dock for the day.

➡️ Auckland is also a mini-turnaround on this itinerary, with around 1,000 guests disembarking and another 1,000 guests embarking.

➡️ Disembarking guests were given the choice to either disembark on the 11th or the 13th.

➡️ Guests embarking Discovery Princess were informed that their new date of embarkation is April 13th.

➡️ Shore excursions are only being offered for April 13th.

➡️ Discovery Princess will no longer be visiting Tauranga or Bay of Islands.
How cruise ships close pools in bad weather ➡️ A How cruise ships close pools in bad weather

➡️ A couple of the cruise ship swimming pools have been closed today on Discovery Princess due to bad weather.

➡️ Nets are used to cover the swimming pools and if the waves get worse then the pools will be emptied partially or fully depending on the severity of the ship’s movement.

➡️ At this point in the day, the Retreat Pool is also closed along with the open decks Forward and Midship on Deck 17 and Deck 18.

➡️ Today we are experiencing winds gusting up to 40 knots or 75km/hr and waves up to 5 metres or 16 feet. The ship isn’t moving around too much at this point, though.

➡️ I’ll share more on the cyclone and Auckland in a future post.
No Wedding Chapel no problem ➡️ On Discovery Pri No Wedding Chapel no problem

➡️ On Discovery Princess, there are a number of options for where you can hold your wedding or renewal of vows ceremony.

➡️ During the past drydock (November 2025) on Discovery Princess, the Wedding Chapel was converted to permanent Concierge space.

➡️ In the past, the Take 5 lounge was also used to host wedding ceremonies, but this space is now part of the casino, filled with slot machines.

➡️ Currently, if you want to get married on the cruise ship, you can choose between The Catch, The Crown Grill, outside above the Retreat Pool, or on the Lido Deck at the back of the ship.

➡️ The space is beautifully transformed with flowers, chair covers, and flower petals.

➡️ Discovery Princess also has an officer dedicated for groups and events, including shipboard weddings and renewal of vows.
Champagne Waterfall on Discovery Princess ➡️ Yest Champagne Waterfall on Discovery Princess

➡️ Yesterday evening was the first formal night of our repositioning cruise to North America.

➡️ Typically the party would be called the Welcome Onboard Party, but it was called the Captain’s Champagne Waterfall, instead.

➡️ This is a unique 25-day repositioning cruise where there will be guests disembarking and embarking on a couple of different dates of the cruise (Auckland and Honolulu).

➡️ On this cruise there will be three formal nights, with each one having a Champagne Waterfall.

➡️ Additionally, there will be two Dress to Impress nights on this cruise (same evening as two of the Captain Circle parties).

➡️ Is this too many nights to get dressed up?
The repositioning cruise towards North America, on The repositioning cruise towards North America, on Discovery Princess, has begun, with the first ports of call to be in New Zealand.

➡️ However, the Meteorological Service of New Zealand has issued a severe weather watch for New Zealand’s North Island as they monitor Cyclone Vaianu.

➡️ Discovery Princess was scheduled to visit three New Zealand ports between April 11th and April 13th, but this may change due to the Cyclone.

➡️ @captain_tony_ruggero made an announcement this afternoon informing guests and crew of potential changes to the itinerary.

➡️ Ironically, today’s seas were eerily calm (calm before the storm?) with most guests relaxing out on deck this afternoon.

➡️ The Captain will make a further announcement tomorrow with another update on specific changes to the itinerary.
The Australia cruise season 2026 on Discovery Prin The Australia cruise season 2026 on Discovery Princess has come to an end. Goodbye Sydney.

➡️ While we were onboard, Discovery Princess had additional turnaround days on February 28, March 12, March 15, March 28, and April 7.

➡️ Every arrival and departure was unique. Here are some highlights.
Ex-Golden Princess has a special place in our pers Ex-Golden Princess has a special place in our personal cruising history.

➡️ The Carnival Adventure was originally named Golden Princess when it was built for Princess Cruises.

➡️ This Grand Class cruise ship made her maiden voyage in 2001 and continued to sail under the Princess Cruises brand until 2021 when it was transferred to P&O Cruises Australia as Pacific Adventure.

➡️ We first cruised on Golden Princess in 2005 when Tony was a Senior Second Officer. Tony was promoted to First Officer on the Golden Princess in late 2005.

➡️ Our kids were two years old when we first cruised on Golden Princess. There was a kids’ “whale pool” on that ship, that our daughters thought was their personal pool 😂.

➡️ In 2007, Golden Princess repositioned to the west coast and our daughters enrolled in kids club for the first time (because they had finally turned three). This was also our kids first cruise to Alaska.

➡️ Between 2021 and 2025, P&O Cruises Australia operated Pacific Adventure.

➡️ Then in March 2025, the cruise ship was transferred to the Carnival Cruise Line brand and was renamed Carnival Adventure.
Who’s cruising out of Vancouver to Alaska this sum Who’s cruising out of Vancouver to Alaska this summer?

➡️ After repositioning from Sydney, Australia this month, Discovery Princess will arrive in Vancouver, Canada on May 6th.

➡️ Then, Discovery Princess will do a short cruise to Seattle and Victoria, and will arrive back in Vancouver on May 9th.

➡️ After that, Discovery Princess will be in Vancouver every other Saturday as a home port for Alaska cruises this summer.

➡️ Although Tony and I get off the cruise ship before the start of the Alaska season, we will be back onboard Discovery Princess at the end of July 2026.
