During drydock, the crew members that work in food During drydock, the crew members that work in food and beverage service operations of Discovery Princess were also very busy.

➡️ During the peak of the dry dock, we had about 1,300 contractors and corporate personnel onboard, in addition to the approximately 1,000 crew members onboard.

➡️ Although the dining rooms for the contractors and corporate personnel were self service for getting their food, the waiters would still clean the tables.

➡️ The Crown Grill Bar, Good Spirits Bar, Princess Live, and International Cafe was also open, for beverages only, during limited hours for the Corporate Personnel.

➡️ For contractors, The Retreat Pool Bar, Wakeview Bar, Gelateria, and International Cafe were also open, for beverages only, during limited hours.

➡️ The limited food/beverage locations opened allowed the majority of the food and beverage teammates to be free to do some other jobs.

➡️ One of the main jobs that the restaurant crew were assigned to do was “Fire Watch”.

➡️ Whenever there was a “hot job” around the ship, whether it was welding or grinding, etc, then a crew member was dispatched with a portable fire extinguisher and safety vest.

➡️ A crew member was required to be present at the site of the hot work for the entirety of the job.

➡️ The Fire Watch dispatch area was set up in O’Malleys, where there was a waiter (like the one in the video here) that would keep track of the crew being assigned a fire watch duty.

➡️ Other important duties for the restaurant teammates was maintaining the seven additional water and coffee stations that were placed throughout the ship.

The Princess Theater on Discovery Princess has had The Princess Theater on Discovery Princess has had some ADA compliance upgrades during drydock.

➡️ New railings have been added at the entrance to the Princess Theater on Deck 7 to provide better accessibility.

➡️ New carpet has been installed indicating designated areas for wheelchair users.

➡️ What do you think of the upgrades?

Check out some of the things I see in the Singapor Check out some of the things I see in the Singapore shipyard while the cruise ship is in drydock.

➡️ Watch a 100T crane lift a container to be loaded onto Discovery Princess.

➡️ Containers are loaded on and off the cruise ship throughout the day.

➡️ Containers from the shipyard, carrying supplies and equipment, are lifted by the crane and loaded onto Deck 16 and 17.

➡️ The crane also removes shipping containers from the ship that are filled with garbage and recycling.

➡️ Also in this video, you can see two gangways. The forward one is used by crew and the midship gangway is used by contractors. There is a third gangway on the port side of the ship that would be used in case of emergency.

➡️ In preparation of the cruise ship being painted, glass and windows were covered in plastic. You can also see the lifeboats covered with blue tarps.

➡️ Some of the balcony partitions were opened in order for crew to easily access the deck and railings. (So different to see all the way to the back of the ship when the partitions are open.)

➡️ We’ve also seen a lot of cloudy skies with occasional downpours throughout our time here in the Singapore drydock.

Singapore is very easy to get around, whether you Singapore is very easy to get around, whether you take the MRT (aka: train) or a Grab (Asia’s version of Uber).

➡️ Although very efficient and easy to use, taking a Grab can get expensive, especially during peak periods of the day.

➡️ Instead, take the MRT. There are 160 stations across six MRT lines that span Singapore. The website lta.gov.sg offers a system map with all the routes.

➡️ As a tourist, these are the stations in Singapore that I found ti be the most useful:

📍Marina South Pier: This station is a 10 minute walk from the Marina Bay Cruise Centre.

📍Marina Bay: This station is a 30 minute walk from the cruise terminal or a 2 minute ride on the NS train from Marina South Pier. From Marina Bay Station you can take the TE train to Chinatown (get off at Maxwell station) in 2 minutes.

📍Raffles Place: This station is the best location to get off and explore the downtown core, with highlights such as the Merlion, Marina Bay Sands, and Chinatown. This stop is on the EW line and the NS line.

📍Tuas Link: This station is at the end of the EW line. If you are a crew member doing a drydock in Singapore at the Seatrium shipyard, this is where the crew shuttle drops you off. From here you can take the train into downtown and get off at Raffles Place.

📍Jurong East: This station is the most convenient if you want to shop at Singapore’s largest outlet mall, IMM. This station is on the EW line. It’s about 25 minutes from Raffles Place station or 25 minutes from Tuas Link station.

➡️ To use the metro, you can easily tap on and off with your credit card. Other methods of payment are detailed on the Land Transport Authority website. Single trip tickets were phased out in 2022.

✅ Save this post for later if you are visiting Singapore in the future.

The World Fresh Marketplace buffet area on Deck 16 The World Fresh Marketplace buffet area on Deck 16 Lido Deck is in the process of getting a huge makeover as part of the ADA drydock project.

➡️ The buffet counters are being lowered.

➡️ The beverage stations and hand washing stations are also being modified to achieve ADA compliance.

➡️ Also, notice the modified counter top seating area in the World Fresh Marketplace.

The Internet Cafe is being converted to an Effy se The Internet Cafe is being converted to an Effy secondary shop on Discovery Princess during drydock.

➡️ There will no longer be an Internet Cafe on Discovery Princess. In its space, on Deck 5 midship, will be a secondary Effy store.

➡️ Changes include new flooring, new display cases, new wall finishes, and new furniture.

➡️ The main Effy shop on Deck 6 will also have some revitalization done during drydock.

➡️ Will you miss having an Internet Cafe onboard? Do you use an Internet cafe onboard a cruise ship?

Suite R617 is an ADA cabin on Discovery Princess a Suite R617 is an ADA cabin on Discovery Princess and it is getting a big refurbishment during drydock.

➡️In this specific cabin, you can see a new vanity and a whole new bathroom.

➡️The bathroom in this suite will now include a bathtub along with the roll in shower. The entrance to the bathroom has also been relocated to near the entrance of the cabin.

➡️ Many of the ADA cabins on Discovery Princess are getting refurbished during the drydock.

➡️ Follow along for more videos on cabin tours and what changes are being made.

What are the Entertainment and hotel officers doin What are the Entertainment and hotel officers doing during drydock?

➡️ During drydock, the Entertainment staff and some Guest Services officers have had the additional duty as a Key Runner.

➡️ Key Runners are issued a key for a cabin in order to access it for a contractor to do work.

➡️ The Key Runner remains in the cabin for the entire duration of the contractor’s work and must not leave the stateroom while the contractors are present.

➡️ Once work is complete, the Key Runner is responsible for locking the stateroom before leaving.

➡️ The time in the cabin varies. One contractor may only need to flush a toilet or take a measurement which may only take a minute or two.

➡️ On the other hand, a contractor may need to be in the cabin for an extended period of time, in which case the Key Runner will have time to spend on their phone, or read a book 😀.

There are so many random jobs happening around the There are so many random jobs happening around the cruise ship during dry dock.

➡️ Today on Discovery Princess, there was scaffolding set up in the Piazza on Deck 5. Two crew members climbed to the top to inspect all the glass pieces of the chandelier (making sure none were loose).

➡️ I have a huge respect for so many of the crew that perform such difficult tasks around the ship.

The Navigational Bridge of Discovery Princess is s The Navigational Bridge of Discovery Princess is still a busy place even during dry dock.

➡️ Most of the deck officers have day work duties which include inspections, maintenance, record-keeping, and follow ups on jobs.

➡️ The officers and cadets have been wearing boiler suits (aka coveralls) as they work throughout the ship and walk in the drydock.

➡️ Only the Third Officers are “on watch” on the Bridge during drydock. Discovery Princess has three Third Officers in the Deck department and they each work six hours on watch and 12 hours off watch (7am to 1pm; 1pm to 7pm; 7pm to 1am; 1am to 7am).

➡️ However, when a Third Officer is not on watch, they are still responsible for day work duties.

➡️ Currently we have an extra Safety Officer onboard because of the additional work during the drydock (normally we only have one Safety Officer when we are in service).

➡️ The big board you see in the video is the Permit to Work board. Permits to Work (for “high risk” jobs such as hot work or entry into an enclosed space) need to be authorized by one of the Safety Officers. These jobs are posted on the board.

➡️ Since the inside of the ship and the drydock are very dirty, the Bridge carpet and chairs have also been covered to protect them from dirty safety shoes and boiler suits, as well as muddy boots.

Discovery Princess dry dock upholstery workshop is Discovery Princess dry dock upholstery workshop is located in the Vista Lounge.

➡️ The Vista Lounge on Discovery Princess has been repurposed as an upholstery workshop during dry dock.

➡️ Contractors spend the day taking apart chairs that are worn out and reupholster them, making them look new again.

➡️ I’m looking forward to seeing the refurbished furniture at the next Captain Circle party in the Vista Lounge.

Watch how the paint is removed from the hull of Di Watch how the paint is removed from the hull of Discovery Princess while she is in dry dock in Singapore.

➡️ The machine to remove the paint is called a spider jet.

➡️ A spider jet is a semi-automatic, high-pressure water-jetting system.

➡️ The “Spider” is attached to the surface of the hull using magnets to hold itself to the surface, allowing for hands-free operation.

➡️ The paint is blasted with high-pressure water jets, effectively stripping away the old coating.

➡️ It is an eco-friendly and efficient method that uses high-pressure water instead of chemicals or abrasives, reducing hazardous waste and protecting the underlying surface from damage.

➡️ Thank you @captain_tony_ruggero for giving me a tour of the Enclave while it’s under construction.

➡️ All three of the saunas are being modified, as part of the ADA enhancement project. Most seats have been removed and will be replaced.

➡️ The pool will also have some modifications done to it.

➡️ In the meantime, most of the heated loungers have been moved out into the hallway.

➡️ The reception desk will also have its counter changed to make it more ADA accessible.

➡️ Follow me for more updates.

The mandatory Emergency Evacuation Drill in dry do The mandatory Emergency Evacuation Drill in dry dock was held this morning on Discovery Princess.

➡️ All contractors, corporate personnel and crew (with the exception of watch keepers and crew on IPM) evacuated the ship as an exercise of an emergency.

➡️ Although only one gangway was used to get off the ship during this drill, in a real emergency, the Discovery Princess has three gangways currently connected, so the process hypothetically would have been three times faster.

➡️ In a real emergency, once you have disembarked the ship, all contractors, corporate personnel and crew would muster on the dock at a designated Fire Point.

➡️ The drill was successfully carried out, according to the Captain and the onboard senior management 👍.

If you were wondering what the Captain was doing t If you were wondering what the Captain was doing this morning….

➡️ Captain Tony was ashore by 5:45am doing his own initial inspection of the outside of the ship and checking the progress of jobs.

➡️ Later in the morning he went ashore again to do the official inspection with the Chief Engineer, the Staff Captain, Staff Engineer, the ship’s superintendent, the Lloyd’s surveyor, and the shipyard’s representative.

➡️ Captain Tony took lots of videos of the rudders, bulbous bow, thrusters, and so much more, which I’ll share some of them in the upcoming days.

➡️ Before Tony came back onboard around 11:30am, he texted me that he was below our balcony. That’s him, the little white dot waving 😀.

➡️ Yesterday evening @captain_tony_ruggero brought the Discovery Princess into the dry dock.

➡️ Once the ship is perfectly positioned on top of 2 metre high blocks within the dry dock, the water is pumped out of the basin, leaving the whole ship’s hull exposed.

➡️ I’ll post more videos of the hull, rudders, thrusters, and stabilizers in the coming days.

➡️ For now, check out the size of the dry dock and the ship as she sits on the blocks.

I get asked this question a lot: “What do you do I get asked this question a lot:

“What do you do while the cruise ship is in dry dock?”

➡️ I love to see the transformation of the cruise ship, especially the cosmetic redesigns or refurbishments. And, I love to take videos to share with you!

➡️ I also love walking on the plastic that is being used to protect the carpet. It sticks to the carpet and other surfaces, making bubbles. It’s like popping bubble wrap!

➡️ Yesterday I managed to walk around 11,000 steps just walking around the ship (lots of stairs 😅).

Guest elevators have also been protected in prepar Guest elevators have also been protected in preparation for dry dock.

➡️ These elevators are normally full of mirrors on all sides so they needed to be boarded up so that contractors can use them.

➡️ This was the only time I took an elevator today as the elevators, that are in service, have been VERY crowded.

➡️ Therefore, I have been mostly taking the stairs.

➡️ However, it is very hot and humid around the ship since this dry dock is in Singapore. There will be days when it will seem even hotter when there are areas of the ship that will have the ventilation shut down.
