Air travel delays and cancellations are the norm n Air travel delays and cancellations are the norm now. Are you mentally prepared to go with the flow?

✈️ I find lately that air travel does not go as planned anymore. You need to routinely expect that there will be some sort of delay or cancellation at one point during your travel day.

✈️ Yesterday we found out in the morning that today’s ITA Airways direct flights from Rome to Toronto were cancelled. This left us scrambling last minute to book alternate flights.

✈️ We did manage to get that sorted and rebooked on flights to Toronto, this time with Lufthansa. Unfortunately it now had a short connection in Frankfurt and Toronto and our seats were no longer together.

✈️ After surprisingly making both tight connections (including exiting Europe and immigration in Toronto), we made it onto our plane in Toronto for our finally leg home.

✈️ But this was not the end of our adventure. Although our plane left the gate and was waiting on the runway to depart, the pilot made an announcement that we would be returning to the gate due to a maintenance issue.

✈️ Do you just expect your flights to be delayed? Are you prepared for the unpredictability of summer air travel delays?
Window or aisle? ✈️ On short flights (less than 2 Window or aisle?

✈️ On short flights (less than 2 hours), I prefer the window seat. I love to watch the take off and landing. The Olbia to Rome flight is less than one hour.

✈️ On flights longer than two hours, I’d rather sit in the aisle. I don’t want to feel trapped inside by the window in case the person on the aisle falls asleep and I need to go to the bathroom.

✈️ Where do you prefer to sit in a flight?
Lambs and goats on the loose in Tanaunella, Sardin Lambs and goats on the loose in Tanaunella, Sardinia.

🐐🐑 As we were driving out of our neighborhood in Tanaunella, Sardinia, there were goats, sheep, and baby lambs that seem to have lost their way.

🐑🐐We pulled our car over and I got out and herded the animals down the dirt road so they wouldn’t get on the main street.

🐑🐐 The sheep dog seemed to have taken the animals on a little excursion 😂.

🐑🐑🐑We had the opportunity to see a few baby lambs yesterday!

➡️ Tony’s sister and brother in law have over one hundred sheep which produce milk.

➡️ The sheep have been recently sheered of their wool which will keep them cooler in the summer.

➡️ Sardinia is very special, where you can see sheep and go to the beach all in the same day!
Rent a boat for the day in La Maddalena Archipelag Rent a boat for the day in La Maddalena Archipelago National Park, Sardinia.

⚓️ The Maddalena Archipelago is a group of islands in the Strait of Bonifacio between Sardinia, Italy and Corsica, France.

⚓️ Take a ferry from Palau on Sardinia to La Maddalena for about 10 Euros per person.

⚓️ The archipelago consists of seven main islands and numerous small islets. The largest one is the island of La Maddalena. The other six islands, in order of size, are Caprera, Spargi, Santo Stefano, Santa Maria, Budelli, and Razzoli.

⚓️ There are lots of boat rental options near the ferry dock or take an organized tour (also near the ferry dock in La Maddalena or even from Palau.)
How does this clock work? A new art installation, How does this clock work?

A new art installation, called The People’s Clock, was recently unveiled at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in April 2026.

Dutch designer Maarten Baas created The People’s Clock with the help of more than 1,000 volunteers and is now on display in Lounge 1, which serves intra-European travellers.

The participants, in this art installation, move in sync to form the hour and minute hands of The People’s Clock, which provides a choreographed representation of time at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.

The clock involves a real-time 12-hour performance which was filmed inside a hangar at Schiphol airport and the majority of the volunteers are airport employees.
How early is too early? When do you arrive to the How early is too early?

When do you arrive to the airport for a flight?

➡️ Today we are flying from AMS to FCO and recently there were posts on social media indicating that the security line ups had been extremely long, with some people missing their flights.

➡️ We arrived to the AMS airport by 5pm for an 8:30pm flight. We were able to check in with KLM and drop our bag with absolutely no lines.

➡️ Then we proceeded to security where again there were no lines.

➡️ We’ve already had a bite to eat at Eataly and are now waiting at our gate two hours before boarding 😂.

➡️ Do you get to the airport super early with the thought, just in case?
Check out the CSMART Hotel in Almere, Netherlands. Check out the CSMART Hotel in Almere, Netherlands.

➡️ This week Tony has been doing a Port Study at CSMART along with a number of other Princess Cruises’ Captains. They’ve been studying a new port in Lithuania in order to bring cruise ships into.

➡️ Maritime professionals working for the brands under the Carnival Corporation umbrella attend CSMART in the Netherlands every one to two years for additional training courses.

➡️ The Center for Simulation & Maritime Training (CSMART) is where maritime professionals strengthen their skills and adapt to new technologies.

➡️ Since 2009, CSMART provides maritime professionals with hands‑on, simulator‑based training built around real‑world operations.

➡️ Maritime professionals from the following cruise lines must attend CSMART for training throughout their careers:

Princess Cruises
Carnival Cruise Line
Holland America Line
Seabourn
Costa
P&O Cruises
Aida
Cunard

➡️ The CSMART hotel has a restaurant that offers specific dining times and a buffet-style service. There is also a bar and lounge area. Although food is complimentary, drinks can be charged to your room.

➡️ Also available for guests is a fitness area, gift store, and a laundrette.

➡️ Officers are allowed to bring their spouse and family for a nominal fee.
Best day trips from Amsterdam We just spent anot Best day trips from Amsterdam

We just spent another week in Amsterdam, and while Tony is busy in the CSMART training centre in Almere, I typically take day trips around the Netherlands.

Here are some of my favourite day trips that I have done over the last few years:

✅ Zaanse Schans
✅ Zaandam
✅ Haarlem
✅ Edam
✅ Muiderslot
✅ Gouda
✅ Delft
✅ Rotterdam

We come to the Netherlands every one to two years (sometimes twice in one year). So it’s exciting to discover different places in addition to exploring Amsterdam.

🇳🇱 Any places that should be on my list for our next trip?

📌 Save this post if you will be visiting Amsterdam, and are looking to do a day trip.
Why stay in Napoli, Italy ✅ Napoli (Naples), Ital Why stay in Napoli, Italy

✅ Napoli (Naples), Italy is located near many popular places such as the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Capri, and Ischia.

✅ Napoli is the capital of the Campania region of Italy and it’s a lot cheaper to stay in Naples than to stay overnight in the Amalfi region.

✅ You can use Napoli as a base to explore the Amalfi Coast, including Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi.

✅ Book tours or take inexpensive public transportation and visit Pompeii and/or Mount Vesuvius.

✅ Take a fast ferry from Naples to Capri. Explore the island, take the Monte Solaro chairlift up to the highest point on the island, or take a boat ride to the Blue Grotto.

✅ Take a ferry from Napoli to the islands of Ischia or Procida. Ischia is known for its mineral-rich thermal waters where you can take advantage of their hot springs and thermal parks.

✅ When in the Napoli area, you must try Neapolitan-style pizza, or better yet, enrol in a pizza making class.

✅ Limoncello is also very popular in southern Italy, particularly in the Campania region. Also try Crema di Limoncello which is made with milk/cream, sugar, and vanilla.

✅ Are you planning a trip to Italy? Does the Napoli area interest you?
Where’s your home airport? There are pros and con Where’s your home airport?

There are pros and cons of flying out of a small regional airport.

✅ Short lines for check in and security

✅ Quick check in process

✅ Small airports are not as chaotic as larger airports

✅ If you fly regularly, you usually see the same agents and security personnel

✅ Cheaper park and fly options

❌ Smaller airplanes are used to fly on routes to larger airports

❌ Flights are often cancelled due to weather or occasionally due to lack of bookings.

❌ If a flight is cancelled, there typically is not another convenient option than if you were at a larger airport

❌ Small airports have very limited food and beverage options while waiting for your flight.

✈️ Our regional airport while we are in Canada is usually Windsor, Ontario (YQG), and then we connect to Toronto (YYZ). It’s a one hour flight.

✈️ Do you usually fly out of a small regional airport or a big city airport? Which do you prefer?
What to wear in an airport. ✈️ Generally, I am co What to wear in an airport.

✈️ Generally, I am cold in an airport and always dress in pants and have a sweater handy to put on top of another long sleeve layer.

✈️ However, Honolulu Airport is an open air airport which is exposed to the hot weather in some sections when walking from gate to gate.

✈️ Dressing in layers with the option of going down to a tank top or t-shirt is how I dress for every airport.
Beach or Pool Day (or both?) 🚢 Discovery Princess Beach or Pool Day (or both?)

🚢 Discovery Princess is in Honolulu today until 11pm

🚢 Since it was Discovery Princess’ first US port since leaving Alaska in October 2025, a full guest and crew immigration had to be done when the cruise ship first arrived.

🚢 Although I disembarked today, Tony will be onboard until May 9th (Vancouver).

🚢 Since I have a late flight, I booked a DayUse hotel, enjoyed the amazing weather today as well as the beautiful Waikiki Beach.

🚢 Would you rather spend the day by the pool, the beach, or go shopping?
Seafood buffet in Sanctuary on Discovery Princess Seafood buffet in Sanctuary on Discovery Princess while scenic cruising in Glacier Bay, Alaska

🚢 Discovery Princess culinary team did a practice run today of how the seafood buffet will be presented while the ship is doing scenic cruising in Glacier Bay, Alaska this summer.

🚢 Check out the sushi, sashimi, oysters, shrimp, fresh fruit, and hot selections, too.

🚢 The Sanctuary is located on Deck 18 at the front of the ship. It costs $40 to reserve a lounge chair for the day.

🚢 This seafood buffet will be exclusive to those that have booked the Sanctuary for the day.

🚢 I’ve included a video of what the Sanctuary looked like while cruising in Glacier Bay in 2024.
Friendliest cruise ship in the fleet is Discovery Friendliest cruise ship in the fleet is Discovery Princess

🚢 Tomorrow Discovery Princess will be in Honolulu, Hawaii and there are more than 650 guests disembarking (and another 650+ guests will be embarking).

🚢 Today there was a Teammate Farewell Parade held in the Piazza to say goodbye to our disembarking guests.
Spa Girls beat Guest Services Team 🚢 Discovery Pr Spa Girls beat Guest Services Team

🚢 Discovery Princess crew had a Tug of War competition today between departments

🚢 The top two teams in the finals were the “Bridge Boys” consisting of deck officers against the “Technical Team” which were engineers. The Bridge Boys won!

🚢 However, the highlight to watch was the Spa girls (manicured nails and all) beat the Guest Services Team. Well done girls!!

🚢 Such a great event to watch where the crew had so much fun.
Rock Opera on Discovery Princess 🕺💃Great performa Rock Opera on Discovery Princess

🕺💃Great performance last night by the cast and company of Discovery Princess.

💃🕺 Rock Opera was performed earlier this cruise so this was the second time that the cast has performed this production show on Discovery Princess.
Time zone adjustments on a transpacific reposition Time zone adjustments on a transpacific repositioning cruise can be difficult.

🚢 On the repositioning cruise from Sydney, Australia to Los Angeles, Discovery Princess will put the ship’s clocks forward 7 times (a total of 7 hours) and one day backwards.

🚢 I discussed in a previous reel (April 13th) how the gaining or losing a day works when crossing the International Dateline if you want to read more about that.

🚢 The ship’s clocks are put one hour forward in the middle of the night, so it’s best for you to adjust your phone manually before you go to bed on the evening when it occurs.

🚢 As for the dates the hours forward occurred (or will occur), Discovery Princess adjusted or will adjust the ship’s clocks on these days:
April 8/9
April 9/10
April 14/15
April 16/17
No time changes between Papeete and Honolulu
April 27/28
April 28/29
April 30/May 1

🚢 Travelling from Sydney to Los Angeles you lose an hour of sleep each time the clocks are moved one hour.

🚢 Do you find that setting the clock forward messes with your sleep patterns?
Crossing the Equator Ceremony on Discovery Princes Crossing the Equator Ceremony on Discovery Princess

🚢 Today Discovery Princess crossed the equator on our way from Tahiti to Honolulu.

🚢 As a tradition, there was a crossing the equator ceremony held on the Lido Deck near the pool.

🚢 Pollywogs are sailors that haven’t crossed the equator before and Shellbacks are sailors that have crossed the equator before.

🚢 A number of guests volunteered to dress in Togas and have colourful whipped cream thrown at them as an initiation from Pollywog to Shellback.

🚢 What a mess!!! Thankfully the deck was protected in plastic and the participants were instructed to not jump in the pool until they rinsed off the whipped cream.

🚢 Have you or would you participate in a Crossing the Equator Ceremony?
Behind the scenes of the Forward Mooring Station o Behind the scenes of the Forward Mooring Station on Discovery Princess

🚢 When the cruise ship is docking and undocking this is where the lines are sent from the ship to the pier. (There is also an aft mooring station for the lines at the back of the ship.)

🚢 The Forward Mooring Station is also the place where a team is required when the ship must drop (and retrieve) the anchor.
