Today’s weather in Ketchikan, Alaska has been ra Today’s weather in Ketchikan, Alaska has been rainy and cold with temperatures as low as 9 degrees C (48 degrees F). Winds have also been gusting over 30 knots. 🚢 My original plan was to do a hike, but so much rain and no visibility on the nearby mountains, made me decide to do that another day. 🚢 Instead, I walked around downtown Ketchikan and got about 6,000 steps in. 🚢 I also placed a special order at @forgetmenotchocolates for chocolate covered Lorna Dune cookies that will be ready for me to pick up next week. 🚢 One other highlight was I got to meet another wife of a cruise ship officer, @christinekesteloo while she is working at Milano Jewelry this week. 🚢 Would you go ashore in these conditions or would you stay onboard? #cruise #discoveryprincess #princesscruises #hollandamerica #cruiselife #weather #raining #rainyday #rainydays☔️

What are the chances of seeing whales on an Alaska What are the chances of seeing whales on an Alaska cruise? 🚢 Today I had the opportunity to be on the bridge with Tony and while I was looking out to the right of the cruise ship’s bow, I saw a whale. 🐋 The whale appeared to be waving with its fin as it swam near the starboard side of the cruise ship. 🚢 Although it appeared “near” to the ship, when taking a video, you can see that it’s really not that close considering the actual size of the whale. 🐋It’s still pretty awesome to see a whale in its natural habitat. And the feeling never gets old seeing them again and again in Alaska. 🚢 We have been seeing whales on every cruise of this season so far. We typically see them after departure from Ketchikan and also on our way to Victoria. One day I even saw one swimming in the port of Skagway. 🚢 The officer of the watch will make an announcement on open decks and in the World Fresh Marketplace buffet area, when whales are spotted. #whales #whalesofinstagram #alaska #cruise #discoveryprincess #princesscruises #cruiselife
Last night, when the USCG helicopter wasn’t avai Last night, when the USCG helicopter wasn’t available to do a medical evacuation of one of Discovery Princess’ guests, one of Holland America’s ships was able to help us. ➡️ Late last night, the USCG notified Discovery Princess that they wouldn’t be able to provide a helicopter to medically transport one of our guests to a shoreside medical facility. ➡️ Discovery Princess was Victoria bound after leaving Skagway yesterday evening, while HAL’s Zaandam was enroute to Juneau. ➡️ The two ships met each other in the early hours of the morning. Discovery Princess put one of her water shuttles in the water and safely transported the guest over to the Zaandam. ➡️ The Zaandam took the Discovery Princess’ guest onboard and brought them to Juneau today where they will be able to receive further medical care. 🚢 Amazing teamwork, dedication, and collaboration to perform this medical evacuation. #princesscruises #hollandamericaline #hollandamerica #cruise #cruiselife #cruiseship #alaska

In Skagway, Princess Cruises hosts an event called In Skagway, Princess Cruises hosts an event called Puppies in the Piazza, on all fleet ships coming to Skagway, Alaska. ➡️ Iditarod champion Ryan Redington brings two of his sled dogs onboard for guests to see, while he shares his story about Iditarod racing and raising sled dogs. ➡️ Every year, Ryan brings puppies from a new litter. Each litter he names them based on a theme. ➡️ This year’s puppies were named after the show, Cheers. Today Ryan brought Diane and Carla. Last week we had Cliff and Norm onboard. ➡️ Last year Ryan named a litter of puppies after the names of Cruise Directors, such as Cole and Olivia. ➡️ Before the puppies are brought out to meet the guests, cruise staff play with them. It always amazes me how quickly a cruise ship can It always amazes me how quickly a cruise ship can be turned around, from the moment the ship arrives in Seattle to the moment it welcomes its new guests. ➡️ Guests that want to walk off with their own luggage can usually start disembarking around 7am. ➡️ This is also the time when the crew start offloading luggage that was collected from guests yesterday evening. ➡️ The luggage is offloaded in cages and brought into the cruise terminal building for guests to collect after they exit the ship. ➡️ Guests are expected to vacate their cabins by 8:30am and the cabin stewards start cleaning, sanitizing, and preparing the cabins for the new cruise guests. ➡️ The empty cages shoreside are then staged and ready to receive luggage from guests that are embarking later. ➡️ The disembarkation process is usually done by about 9:30am. ➡️ Guests typically start embarking close to 10:30am, dropping off their luggage at the baggage drop off, going through security, and then going through the check-in process. ➡️ Guest cabins are usually ready around 1pm and luggage is delivered to the cabins throughout the afternoon. ➡️ While the cruise ship is docked, it receives fuel, food provisions, and other stores. 🚢 Leave your comments if you have any questions about turnaround day. #princesscruises #discoveryprincess #cruise #cruiseship #cruiselife
